We know clinically that laughter and play have medicinal qualities, offering physical, psychological and physiological benefits as well. In the workplace, humor and fun can increase productivity, encourage creativity, enhance team building, and thus improve esprit de corps.

While we may not be able to control everything that happens to us in our jobs and work environments, we do have control over how we choose to react. I coach others how to create an environment which is safe and friendly, and use humor to help maintain a healthy balance between the pressure and seriousness which comes from high stakes jobs and a competitive marketplace. UK Government Announce Work Permit Changes

In a week when Tory leader David Cameron pledged that a Conservative Government would cut immigration, John Reid seems to be beating him to the punch.

Home Secretary Reid has brought in a raft of immigration restrictions since he replaced Charles Clarke earlier this year, and hes only just getting started. The entire immigration system is currently being overhauled as part of the Governments 5 year stategy, which includes the introduction of a new Points-Based Scheme.

This month alone the Home Office announced three important changes to Work Permit schemes and the leave to remain process.

On 10th November the Home Office announced that FLR (Further Leave to Remain) forms were changing from 8th November. Thats right, they published the changes two days after the forms were withdrawn.

This means that if you are dealing with any in country Work Permits you will need to download the new FLR forms from the Home Office website www.workingintheuk.gov.uk.

The FLR forms were ammended following surprise restrictions to the HSMP (Highly Skilled Migrant Programme) on 7th November. The previous HSMP scheme was temporarily withdrawn, without notice, pending the introduction of a new sheme on 5th December 2006. On Monday 13th November it was revealed that the WP1 or Work Permit Application forms will be changing again effective 27th November. Existing forms will be accepted up until 22 December. The change also applies to WP1X and various other Work Permit forms.

The Home Office has removed more occupations from the Shortage Occupations list including various categories of Engineers. This follows the removal of Nursing from list in August, causing problems for Care Homes applying for Work Permits.

More Details Released on Points System

At a recent conference of Immigration Law Practitioners John Larkins, Deputy Director of Managed Migration revealed further snippets of information on how the points based system will operate.

Mr Larkins was the keynote speaker at the annual conference of the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner (OISC) in London. As one of the schemes principle architects Mr Larkins was able to give us an insight as to how the system will work in practice, but stressed that the actual rules were still not finalised.

Employers and educational establishments will be required to register as Sponsors and will be expected to take responsibility for the suitability of candidates, as well as informing the Home Office of no shows and early leavers.

Up to 60000 employers and 8000 educational establishments are expected to register and a grading system is likely to be introduced.

Work Permits will be replaced by Certificates of Sponsorship issued by registered employers, who will be expected to vouch for their candidates Ability and Intention.

The Home Office has already started recruiting 190 Account Managers and 140 Compliance Officers to manage sponsors, prior to the first phase being implemented in April 2008.

The Internet is full of ads for work at home opportunities promising you thousands of dollars a month for staying at home while doing little or no work. If you are struggling financially, as so many people are, these ads sound like the answer to your dreams.

If you are thinking about investing your time or money in any of these ads, proceed with caution. Not all work at home opportunities deliver on their promises. In fact, a large percentage of them are scams and should be avoided.

Most advertisements for these opportunities deliberately omit certain facts, including only the information that will draw your attention. There is no mention of how many hours you will need to devote to the program or what the total investment costs may be.

Many work at home schemes require you to cover the costs of placing newspaper ads, buying office supplies, etc. This is in addition to whatever start-up fee or initial investment is required. Many people lose thousands of dollars plus their time and energy because they fall prey to these schemes.

There are many of these work at home scams floating around on the Internet. Some of them are listed below:

ASSEMBLY OR CRAFT WORK: Most of these programs tell you how easy it is to produce goods for a company that promises to buy them from you once you complete them, thus earning you a nice weekly income. They fail to tell you how many hours are required in order to produce those items or how much of your money is required as an investment in equipment or supplies, sometimes adding up to hundreds of dollars.

An example of this is a company that pays you to make aprons. You need to either have a sewing machine or purchase one. You may also be required to buy materials to make your aprons. However, after you purchase the materials and equipment and perform the work required, you are not paid.

How can they get away with this? They tell you the work does not meet their quality standards. Unfortunately, no work ever done by anyone is up to standard leaving you with a loss of income and investment. If you want to sell the items you have made, you are forced to find your own customers.

CHAIN LETTERS: Ads for chain letters tell you to make copies of a certain letter and send that letter to people whose names and addresses are provided. All you are required to do is send ten dollars for a mailing list and labels. You are then shown a chart to see how you can automatically receive thousands of dollars.

In reality, the only people who ever make any money from chain letters are the ones who are at the top of the chain who, by the way, are continually changing names and post office boxes. The person who sends you the chain letter tries to pull you in by claiming to be a successful lawyer who does this on the side and who assures you that there is nothing illegal about chain letters.

ENVELOPE STUFFING: Ads for envelope stuffing have been around for years in various formats. The basic claim is that for a fee, you will be provided with directions to earn money from home simply by stuffing envelopes.

After you make the initial investment, you discover there was never any real employment offer. Instead, you are told how to place ads in newspapers, magazines, online classifieds, etc. The only way for you to earn money is if people respond to your ads.

MULTI-LEVEL MARKETING: Ads for MLM programs tell you how you can earn more money than you have ever had in your life. By joining their program it will be possible for you to let others earn money for you while you enjoy your prosperous lifestyle!

Multi-level marketing is a business based on direct sales. It is a solid, well-established, legal form of business that has provided profit for many people who have successfully sold products for reputable companies.

Many illegal pyramid schemes can resemble these legitimate MLM programs. The difference is that instead of selling a product, your primary goal is to recruit others into the program. At some point, everything collapses because the market becomes saturated and only a few people at the top have made money.

MEDICAL BILLING: Ads for medical billing are in newspapers, magazines, and on the Internet. The sales pitch says there is a crisis in the health care industry due to the massive task of processing paper claims. Since only a small fraction of the claims are fulfilled electronically, the opportunities in this area are huge.

Supposedly, doctors want to contract out their billing services to save money. The Care Industry Still Needs Foreign Workers

As Home Secretary John Reid ponders over whether or not to admit thousands of Romanian and Bulgarian workers next year, we ask what the Government is doing to help the private care sector to solve continuing staff shortages.

Last week, in a reaction to mounting public anxiety over immigration, Mr Reid has effectively called for official limits on the numbers coming into Britain. He hinted that a new body could be set up to advise the government on "optimum levels of immigration" consistent with the country's economic needs and "social stability".

This is a major shift in policy by a government which previously welcomed immigration and talked of the economic benefits migrants bring to Britain.

The announcement follows news of a leaked Home Office report revealing deep concerns over the rising numbers of immigrants coming in from new EU countries in Eastern Europe.

People recognise that others from outside this country can bring great skills here, but they also want to be assured that our services, whether its schools or hospitals, and indeed their own terms and conditions, will be preserved and immigration will be managed, Reid said on a news discussion program on the BBC.

John Reid is widely expected to impose restrictions on free movement of labour from Romania and Bulgaria, following the large migration of workers from Eastern Europe since 2004. Britain was one of only three countries to allow people from the 10 new member states to migrate.

Original estimates of 13000 new arrivals in the first year were probably exceeded in the first week and the numbers have since risen to over 600,000 prompting fears that we are being overrun. The vast majority of the new arrivals are in full time work.

In a BBC interview yesterday Home Office Minister Tony McNulty admitted that the Government had been in the dark when it estimated how many workers would come to the UK from the expanded EU.

Whilst the care industry may have benefited from the increased availability of labour from countries like Poland and Latvia, many employers have reported that the benefits have been short lived as they freely move from job to job. Workers from the new EU member states do not need work permits and have the same choices as the resident workforce. In other words they can also opt for an easier life and more money working for a local supermarket, commonly known as the "Tesco Factor".

Eastern European workers have not solved our staffing problems Home Owner

Other care home owners and managers have also told me that Polish and other Eastern European workers have not solved their staffing problems. A care home owner who preferred not to be named told me that the Polish carers he recruited do not stay in the job very long.

We put a lot of time and effort into the recruitment, training and induction process, as well as helping them get settled, only to find that as soon as theyve got their bearings theyre off to find higher paid jobs.

To make matters worse, the Government are constantly making life difficult for anyone trying to bring in staff from outside the EU. Even renewing a work permit has become a minefield where one wrong move can lead to disastrous consequences.

We have recently taken over an immigration case where a new care home owner applied for a work permit extension for a Senior Carer from the Philippines. The Home Office refused the application due to a mistake on the job title and will not change their decision. The applicants visa was about to expire and had we not rescued the situation she would have been sent home along with her husband a son.

It beggars belief that the very people this country needs to attract, skilled people willing and able to do the jobs nobody else seems to want to do, are being victimised and run out of the country.

Employers are also in for a tougher time and will soon be required to take on more responsibility for their overseas staff and face sanctions and heavy fines if things go wrong. See www.immigrationmatters.co.uk.

Other sectors, like the catering industry, are also suffering from staff shortages. However, unlike restaurants or hotels, care homes face the ultimate threat closure if they fail to meet strict staffing criteria. Dame Denise Platt, Chair of the CSCI, has warned that staff shortages are putting patients at risk.

The Government seems to base their immigration decisions solely on the needs of the NHS

The Government recently decided that the NHS has sufficient numbers of home grown Nurses, and brought in sweeping changes completely ignoring the needs of the private sector.

General Nurses, (the ones most needed in Care Homes) were taken off the official shortage list on 14th August, despite the fact that Nurses are still in short supply in the private sector. Employers will now have to go through the resident labour test in order to obtain a work permit for an overseas nurse.

I carried out a quick search on the Job Centre Plus website today and found 2144 nursing vacancies for jobs paying up to 24000 per annum. The Nursing Times website boasts Thousands of UK Nursing Jobs and I dare say that local newspapers all over the UK carry dozens of Care Homes advertisements for Nursing jobs.

There are also over 7000 vacancies for Care Assistants listed on the Job Centre site and yet the Government still refuses to acknowledge that it should be listed a shortage occupation.

Senior Carer work permits have become more difficult to obtain in recent years and visas for work permit holders are regularly refused. This Monday I attended yet another hearing at the appeals tribunal (AIT) to help fight the case of a Senior Carer wrongfully refused a visa by the British Embassy in Manila. Fortunately the judge agreed with us and allowed the appeal on the spot.

The NHS may not have a staff shortage, but the private sector still finds it difficult to recruit good quality staff locally and has no choice but to look overseas.

In my experience, the only place where you will find large numbers of highly qualified English speaking care staff, who will stay for the long run, is in countries like India and The Philippines.

Employers must be allowed to choose where best to find the staff they need to give them and their residents longer term stability.

Undoubtedly, the surprise film of 2002 was 8 Mile, the story about a young white rapper in Detroit who struggles with his broken family, gold-digging friends, and simply to find his identity in the nefarious world in which he lives. Starring the best-selling rap artist Eminem, 8 Mile is supposedly autobiographical in nature, portraying the true life rise of Marshall Mathers from the hardened streets of Detroit to the gold paved highways of superstardom. But the film begins and ends in the ghetto, cataloguing the time prior to the rapper's success. As a movie, it performs its duties well - virtually transporting the viewer to the crime and poverty riddled neighborhoods of one of America's most dangerous cities.

Local youth Jimmy "B-Rabbit" Smith, Jr. harbors dreams of hitting the big-time as a rapper (along with most of his peers in Detroit), but few are supportive of his efforts, especially his mother Stephanie (Kim Basinger), a self-centered woman who neglects her five-year-old daughter, remains unemployed, and generally wastes her life away. A surprisingly well-written screenplay wrought with symbolism, 8 Mile vividly portrays the life of an angry urban youth who aches to express his hatred for the world around him. For those conservative or older viewers who may be reluctant to the see the film because of its leading star Eminem, I highly recommend giving 8 Mile a chance. As people browse the Web, they land on a page and navigate on a website. To find their way around they need a navigation system. Navigation is as important for web design as for a real life drive: when you drive on a new road you want to see clear marked destinations, exits and parking lots. You want to know where you are and where you go. So do your visitors. Fail to provide a clear road map and they will go back to where they came from. Navigation should be clear and simple. There are three major types of navigation: global, local and hierarchical.

Web designers use global navigation for medium-sized and small websites to categorize the main points of interest. Hierarchical navigation refers to large websites such as web directories, article directories, news portals and so on. This approach is somehow confusing for web novices: they cannot really find their way, especially when the navigational structure is not clear (some web designers omit important navigational elements such as you are here, back, next page etc.)

One important note about local navigation: it works great when you need cross traffic. You could use embedded links to lead your visitors to information that is somewhere else on your website or on a different website. But if you need to link to another website use a target=_blank approach that will open the link in a new window. Thats how the visitors will not lose the path back to your website.

Many times web designers use a mix of the three navigational styles, depending on the size of a website, its categories and the importance of these categories. As a rule all sites have a global navigation principle: the navigation bar. Standard placements of the navigation bar are on the top or along the left side of the screen. Some designers place the nav bar on the right side but users are not really familiar with this approach. The worse practice is promoted by flash designers who ignore web usability standards and make the visitors guess where the links are.

No matter where you want to place the nav bar, remember: keep it simple. Take a look at the websites of big corporations. For example Philips placed the nav bar at the top to define the main categories and uses a java script to help users navigate to particular points of interest. On secondary pages Philips is using a left navigation bar. All in one, the web designers that created the website for Philips used all three major types of navigation, but the design respects one radical principle: Sense and simplicity. These three retirement calculators are the more realistic calculators on the Net. They help us calculate how much money we will need to retire. However, they do not help us manage our retirement funds after we retire.

Once we retire, the variables involved in calculating retirement finances are greatly reduced. Unless Aunt Bess leaves you an unexpected inheritance in her will, you know what your retirement savings are that have to last your lifetime.

Unless inflation runs away during our retirement, the major variables we have to consider are how much we budget to spend each year, the amount we make from our retirement job, and how long we choose to work at that retirement job.
